Army Builder 2.2 | ||||||||||||||
Medium: Software CD-ROM for PC Type: Miniatures war game utility Author/Programmer: Rob Bowes Publisher: Lone Wolf Development Reviewer: Randall Constant Price: 36.99 Army Builder v2.2 is the newest version of the popular miniatures game utility. It allows a player to brainstorm ideas for army construction, save current lists, and tweak current armies for any number of various scenarios. Now you may ask why you need Army Builder when all it takes is an army list, calculator, and your imagination? Well that's the way I thought too, until I took ABv2.2 for a test drive. First off ABv2.2's interface is simple, clean and easy to use. The sheer volume of possible games it can be used for is amazing as well. Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, War Gods of Aegyptus, and Void all have downloadable lists with which to build your armies. Out of print game lists are also available such as Space Hulk, Chainmail, Clan War and Gorka Morka. There are also lists for Historical games like English Civil War. I have not even scratched the surface of what is available. The next thing that will impress the user about Abv2.2 is how exhaustive, and up to date the lists are. I've actually seen 40k lists appear before the Chapter Approved hits print. ABv2.2 is also user friendly. Depending on what system you are building for the Army Builder helps you keep track of required slots, and reminds you of missed options. The builder also keeps track of your point's totals while you build, and shows you what percentage of your army is in each option (HQ, troops etc.). An added feature that I enjoy is the ability to name characters, and to add non-statistical information about units, such as history. Campaign style systems like Necromunda and Blood Bowl also allow the user to progress their characters and team mates by increasing their experience points and such. Overall, I have found Army Builder to be an invaluable tool, that has saved me time in composition, and I think has helped me build better and more balanced armies.
